UPDATE: COUNCIL 31 REPORT ON HEALTH AND SAFETY AT CPL

This post was written by Local 1215 member Izabel Gronski.

At the August 22nd General Membership Meeting, staff representatives from AFSCME Council 31 shared a 12 page report on The Health and Safety Emergency in Chicago Public Libraries. The purpose of this report is to highlight a sample of ongoing issues that make our jobs difficult and sometimes dangerous. From broken HVAC systems to neglected elevator maintenance and more, these unresolved issues cause illness and accidents for both staff and patrons. The report also covers a selection of patron issues including assaults, harassment, and other dangerous situations that library workers face every day.

This report is being shared with the Mayor’s Office and Aldermen to bring needed attention to these issues and support for the policy recommendations proposed within. Stay tuned for updates on these conversations and possible calls for action as we continue to raise awareness and work for meaningful change to keep all library workers and patrons safe within Chicago Public Libraries.
